The El Dorado School District (ESD) is proud to congratulate Holly Billings on the completion of her Doctor of Social Work degree from the University of Tennessee.
This remarkable achievement marks a significant milestone in Holly's professional journey, reflecting her unwavering commitment to positively impacting the lives of ESD students, staff, and the community.
"Completing a doctorate symbolizes the culmination of years of dedication and the ability to overcome challenges," Billings said.
Billings has been an integral part of ESD for six years. She began as a Behavior Support Specialist, pioneering district-wide mental health and positive behavior programs. Currently, she serves as the Mental Health Coordinator for the district. Her roles involve providing behavior support, building district-wide mental health programs, and fostering relationships with school administration, teachers, staff, mental health organizations, and various other stakeholders.
From a young age, Billings demonstrated a natural ability to support and empathize with others. "Since childhood, I have been a natural confidant, often approached by friends with their problems, concerns, and struggles. This early inclination to help others directed my career path," she shared.
In 2001, Billings pursued a Bachelor of Social Work degree from Evangel University, which set the foundation for her diverse and impactful career. She began as a childcare worker for children and youth in foster care within a residential treatment setting. Billings then moved to St. Louis, to earn a Master of Social Work degree from Saint Louis University. Her career in St. Louis spanned various roles, including eating disorder treatment, juvenile justice, and victim advocacy. Eventually, she returned to residential treatment as a therapist before joining the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), where she held positions in suicide prevention, military sexual trauma treatment, complex PTSD, and serious mental illness for over a decade.
A long-held aspiration inspired her decision to pursue a doctorate. "Reflecting during the COVID-19 pandemic, I decided to prioritize this goal for myself and my son's future," Billings explained. Her doctoral research focused on evaluating an alternative discipline program at Washington Middle School, designed to address the root causes of behavior and restore relationships. This program's success has led to its expansion to Barton Junior High and Northwest Elementary in the upcoming academic year.
Billings’ favorite aspect of working at the El Dorado School District is the dedication of the staff to serve students holistically. "The district's commitment to meeting the comprehensive needs of students, often in unseen ways, is truly inspiring," she noted.
Billings’ dedication and achievements exemplify the spirit of excellence and commitment that define the ESD. We are incredibly proud of her accomplishments and look forward to the continued positive impact she will have on our community.
“By continuing to strive for positive impact, I aim to leave a lasting legacy of empowerment and growth in my community and beyond,” added Billings.
