Farm to School Week
“Celebrating Local” was the theme for Hugh Goodwin’s Farm to School week. Various community members shared their knowledge of farms and gardens with our students. Lily Ellen, South Ark Culinary Arts Department, made pizza with our fourth graders using fresh ingredients. Julie McGee spoke to first grade about beekeeping and baking using fresh honey. Seasonal planting was the day’s topic with Cherrie Sweeney, Union County Extension Office, for third grade. They planted lettuce in the garden beds. We ended our week with Kindergarten learning about goats with Elizabeth Young, Rachel and Cambry Thurmon from Block-R Feed. Second graders learned about beekeeping from Jason and Griffin Reed. The Reed’s honey was also served in the cafeteria for all students to taste test. Hugh Goodwin students had a fantastic week learning about how we can grow our own food and eat local produce from local farmers.
